Research Profile

Angelo Auricchio is director of the Clinical Electrophysiology Unit at Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino, Lugano, Switzerland, and Professor of Cardiology at University Hospital in Magdeburg, Germany. He is the immediate past President of European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) and Scientific Director at the Fondazione Ticino Cuore, an institution devoted to increase public awareness of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims and to improve the survival rate of its victims.

Dr. Auricchio graduated in 1985 at Medical School in Naples (Italy). In 1994 he received a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology at University of Rome "Tor Vergata" (Italy), in 2000 he was appointed as assistant professor in cardiology, and finally in 2008 he was appointed as professor of cardiology at University of Magdeburg. Dr. Auricchio is also a part-time professor in Cardiology at University of L'Aquila (Italy).

Dr. Auricchio served as principal investigator of several important multicentre studies and international registries, including the PATH-CHF studies, the PROTECTA study, the RESHAPE study, the CLEPSYDRA Study, and WISE-CRT. He has served as Chair of the EHRA Cardiac Rhythm Management Product Performance Task Force, as co-chair the joint Heart Rhythm Society and EHRA Expert Consensus Statement on Cardiac Device Monitoring, and has served as member of the Task Force of European Society of Cardiology Guidelines for Cardiac Pacing and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, and Guidelines for Heart Failure.

He has also been a very active member of numerous scientific societies including the Heart Rhythm Society, the European Society of Cardiology and the European Heart Rhythm Association. He has served as member of the Training and Research Grant Committee of the European Society of Cardiology, as member of the Clinical Practice Guidelines of European Society of Cardiology, as Chairman of the Scientific Initiative Committee of the EHRA, and as Chairman of the Scientific Documents Committee of EHRA. He has been a Board member of the European Society of Cardiology, of the Cardiovascular Roundtable of the European Society of Cardiology, and Board Chairman and President of the European Heart Rhythm Association.

He authored over 70 scientific review articles and book chapters and more than 200 original scientific papers, and co-editor of several books (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, Pacing to Support the Failing Heart, Cardiac Imaging for Diagnosis and Treatment of Electrical Disorder, Case Studies in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, and Clinical Cardiac Pacing, Defibrillation, and Resynchronization Therapy). He has served or is currently serving among others on the editorial board of Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology, and EP Europace Journal.

In 1991, Dr Auricchio has been awarded with the very prestigious Young Investigator Award of the North American Society of Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, and in 2005 he received the Fritz Acker Award of the Germany Society of Cardiology for his breakthrough research activities in the field of cardiac resynchronization therapy. Finally, Dr Auricchio is an inventor as well. He has about 10 currently active patents and applications, being the most relevant one the left ventricular pacing lead with an over-the-wire design; this lead represents today the standard pacing technique for cardiac resynchronization therapy.
